The CCTV for Taxi system provided by SAFE Systems CCTV Ltd has been specifically designed for the licensed Taxi and Private Hire trade. The blue prints for the system were set out at the inception of the company, our black box system is unique and encased in a commercial grade gun metal unit. Our future proof design and adaptability allows us to modify our installation to satisfy any Local Authority criteria.
We understand that licensed drivers may have many questions, in this section our aim is to provide answers to common questions that we are asked prior to each installation.
Q. Is CCTV for Taxi different to a Dashcam
A. Yes, CCTV for Taxi or Private Hire licensed vehicle is for the purpose of recording passenger data inside the vehicle. This includes video, and may include switch panic switch controlled audio, the type of panic switch used depends on Local Authority conditions.
Q. As a licensed Taxi Driver, Private Hire Driver, or Private Hire Operator, what do I need to know?
A. The CCTV for Taxi systems for use within licensed Hackney carriages (Taxis) and Private hire Vehicles are designed to fully comply with UKGDPR regulations due to recording within a licensed public space.
Q. Can I use any dashcam in my licensed vehicle?
A. Yes, but only for external image recording, they must not record anything internally at all since dashcams simply do not satisfy ICO or UKGDPR regulations.
Q. Is there somewhere that I can read about CCTV for Taxi policy and conditions that apply to my own licensed vehicle?
A. Yes, such details will be contained within the Taxi and private hire Licensing Policy for your area, most local councils have a section about CCTV for Taxi, most will show SAFE Systems CCTV Limited as being approved, we ensure our system is installed to satisfy and comply with local specifications.
Q. Do you install throughout the UK?
A. Yes, we install CCTV in Hackney Carriages (Taxi) & Private Hire vehicles throughout the UK. Our company head office is in Lancashire and we have an Approved Installer programme with auto-electricans up and down the country to ensure you can travel to the location most convenient to you.
Q. Why Must I use a Council Approved CCTV for Taxi System?
A. Where there is a list of Council Approved CCTV forTaxi systems, those suppliers have satisfied and demonstrated that they meet the criteria for CCTV for Taxis in locally licensed vehicles set by the Local Authority. Local Authorities try to ensure that system suppliers are indeed providing a service that satisfies the needs of their drivers, protects the public and also complies with UKGDPR as laid out in ICO Regulations and guidance.
Q. Is my license at risk if I use my own recording device?
A. Recording internally without meeting those requirements would most certainly breach your licensing conditions, and could be a serious data protection breach.
Q. CCTV Systems contain passenger sensitive data, who can access recordings?
A. This very much depends on your licensing authority conditions. Many Local Authorities have mandated CCTV for Taxi installation, and will therefore be the Data Controller, data must be provided to any person or organisation that has a legitmate interest or lawful reason to request it. Where the installation of CCTV for taxi has not been made mandatory, your council may still have a restricted access policy, which means they may still act as data controller.
Q. My council says I must be the Data Controller, Can I access the data directly?
A. YES, in fact in such cases, you are the only person who may have any access to the data stored on your device, but you must register with the ICO as data controller, which can be found here: https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-fee/.
Q. Can i Make a copy of the files if i need it for council, police or insurance?
A. YES, the data controller retrieves the data by physically connecting the hard drive to a windows computer to access the files using our dedicated decryption software, once accessed, it can then be decrypted to MP4 format and saved for sharing with the interested party.
Q. Is there something you can do if the CCTV for Taxi System or my vehicle is stolen?
A. Yes. the aim would be to retrieve the data from the system once the vehicle is recovered to allow you to provide evidence.
Q. is On/Off switched audio safer than timed audio?
A. Yes, timed audio is actually quite dangerous as it means having to reactivate the switch repeatedly in a setting that is already volatile, having an "On/Off switch is far safer, as it means once activated, the audio stays active until it is turned off again using the same switch, this massively reduces risk of attack, improving safety; the safest option should always be the decision made.
